The university library contains approximately 400,000 books. In
addition, it has 6,000 magazines and journals, and approximately 5,000
audiovisual materials. The rare book archives include the collection
of materials related to our founder, Utako
Shimoda, together with the Yamagishi, Mukoda, Honma, Kurokawa, and
Tokiwamatsu Collections.
The materials about Shimoda include letters and manuscripts written in her own hand, together with materials about Jissen. The Yamagishi Collection includes Chinese classics, Chinese poetry written by Japanese, and old commentaries on the Tale of Genji previously owned by Professor Yamagishi, one of our previous presidents. Kuniko Mukoda was a graduate of Jissen who became a famous writer; the Mukoda Collection consists of her manuscripts and related materials. The Honma Collection includes letters written by Oscar Wilde and related materials; the Kurokawa Collection consists of old printed books and manuscripts, such as the Tale of Genji, collected by Harumura Kurokawa; and the Tokiwamatsu Collection consists of printed books and manuscripts in a wide range of fields, such as old Japanese tales, Japanese poems, incense appreciation, and cooking.
