Departments, Content of Teaching

In the Faculty of Human Life Sciences, we aim to endow our students with a broad range of knowledge in the fields of food, nutrition, health, clothing, housing, lifestyle, daycare and kindergarten education, and strive to nurture the knowledge and the ability needed for work related to each special field. The faculty consists of four departments: Food and Health Sciences, Human Environmental Sciences, Human Sciences and Arts, and Studies on Lifestyle Management. The content of teaching for each department is as follows.

Department of Food and Health Sciences

In the Department of Food and Health Sciences, we nurture specialists in health and nutrition, and food and livelihood. Our aim is to nurture in our graduates the ability to play an active part in society when they find employment in the field of food and to nurture the practical ability that is required for the qualications obtained. The department consists of three courses; Registered Dietitian Major, Food Sciences Major and Health and Nutrition Major.

Registered Dietitian Major

Nurturing specialists who can support society through food

The national qualification of Registered Dietitian is for specialist work that requires a high level of ability. This work takes a variety of forms, such as nutritional guidance for maintaining health, nutritional guidance needed for people recovering from illness, and meal supply management. Students in the Registered Dietitian Major study the various forms of knowledge needed to carry out such work in both theory and practice, and aim at obtaining an overall understanding of food and health. At the time of graduation, they can receive the nutritionist qualification or the qualification for nutrition teacher, or they can obtain the qualification to take the national exam for Registered Dietitian.

Food Sciences Major

Nurturing specialists who can support a tasty, safe, and healthy food environment

Food science is the study to comprehensively understand about food based on the social background that encompasses food. Our students acquire various knowledge related to food as well as cooking skills. We cover everything from modern food environment to academic knowledge of foodstuffs, nutritional balance, food safety, taste and enjoyment, the spirit of omotenashi (hospitality), and every other aspect of food culture. In the Food Sciences Major, we nurture specialists who can provide rich and safe food to consumers. Our students can attempt to obtain various qualifications, such as food specialist or food hygiene inspector.

Health and Nutrition Major

Nurturing specialists who can overcome modern food problems and ensure health

In the Health and Nutrition Major, we nurture specialists who possess social common sense and a broad education regarding food and can produce a food lifestyle plan that matches various stages of life. In addition to knowledge of food and nutrition, our students can study various fields, such as knowledge and skills of cooking, and knowledge of the human body, and in addition, sports health science, food planning and guidance for people of all ages ranging from children to the elderly, food culture, and food safety. We nurture specialists with adaptability to play an active part in fields from local communities to the food business and with practical ability to understand the social activities of people and who can plan health support.

Department of Human Environmental Sciences

Thinking of a rich living environment from the viewpoint of clothing, objects, housing

Human Environmental Sciences means thinking about our immediate environment to make it possible for us to live comfortably. Our department consists of the three pillars of clothing, objects, and housing: it is possible to study a wide range of themes from clothing, products, interior design, and building to urban development. Our students can choose to study a special field by taking one of the three model courses:apparel & fashion, product & interior design, or housing environment design, or they can choose to study a mixture from these three fields that matches their interests.

Department of Human Sciences and Arts

Researching livelihood with an eye to lifetime human development

In the Department of Human Sciences and Arts, we try to understand modern-day problems such as the diversification of the family, human relationships, children’s upbringing, and safe living, and acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills related to livelihood, family, health, hygiene, and education. By viewing these problems psychologically and objectively, analyzing them, and solving them subjectively, we hope our students will acquire practical skills, and the ability to attempt to improve and perfect people’s livelihood. In order for our students to specialize more deeply, the department has established the two courses, Life Psychology Major and Early Childhood Education Major.

Life Psychology Major

Researching our lives from the viewpoint of psychology and nurturing the power to find solutions for topics and problems near to us

By studying psychology and thinking about the problems that our students feel in their life they can acquire the skills and specialty that makes various paths possible. Furthermore, by accumulating experiences with practical studies in various fields, and studying about family, health, and the society where they live, from the viewpoint of psychology, they can research a wide range of life stages from childhood to adulthood.

Early Childhood Education Major

Aiming at being a childcare and education expert possessing wide knowledge and flexible thinking power

Our aim is to nurture childcare and early childhood education specialists possessing a broad point of view in addition to having specialist knowledge related to daycare and early childhood education and welfare. We expect our students to acquire a wide range of knowledge in fields related to health, such as psychology, food, and hygiene, as well as economics, media, and environment. We nurture talent who will have a secure grasp of the social situation and deep understanding of the healthy environment needed for children. In addition, they will accumulate a variety of experiences in volunteer work or local activities, which will also nurture the ability to understand children as well as the ability to solve various problems that confront society.

Department of Studies on Lifestyle Management

Creating people’s life and future by considering future society

In the Department of Studies on Lifestyle Management, we develop our teaching in the three axes of Environment, Media, and Independence. We nurture our students to possess the power to find social topics,develop concrete ideas for solutions, and to conceive the necessary form. Then we send them out to enterprises or local communities.
The feature of our department is its comprehensive study method. Considering the situation with modern-day problems from the point of view of concrete social phenomena and understanding the common structural problems that are in the background, our students search for a practical method of solving these problems.
In order to achieve this, from the first year, we introduce project-based classes. In these project-based classes, the students find the problem, think of the methods of solving it, and then carry out their plan. In this way, they experience the methods of proceeding with various project-based tasks that are essential for modern-day society. Working in collaboration with enterprises and government agencies or NPOs, they experience first-hand the pleasure and sense of achievement
gained from tackling tasks as a team.
