Jissen Girls' School and Jissen Girls' Polytechnic founded by Utako Shimoda at Kojimachi, Tokyo

1903

Moved to Shibuya, Tokyo

1905

Department established for students from China

1908

Jissen Higher Specialized School (forerunner of Jissen Women's University) founded; Jissen Girls' School and Jissen Girls' Polytechnic merged and renamed Jissen Girls' Private School

1920

Jissen Higher Specialized School reorganized into 3 departments: Japanese, Home Economics, and Practical Arts

1924

English Department added to Higher Specialized School

1932

Jissen Higher Specialized School renamed Jissen Women's College

1949

Jissen Women's College promoted to Jissen Women's University (Faculty of Literature and Home Economics)

1950

Jissen Women's Junior College (Department of Home Economics) established

1952

Departments of Japanese Literature and English Literature added to Jissen Women's Junior College

1965

Jissen Women's University divided into Faculty of Humanities (Departments of Japanese Literature and English Literature) and Faculty of Home Economics (Departments of Food Science and Clothing Science); General Education courses of University moved to new campus at Hino in western Tokyo

1966

Graduate Schools of Humanities (Master's Programs: Japanese Literature and English) and Home Economics (Master's Program: Food Science and Nutrition) established

1969

Doctoral Program in Japanese Literature added to Graduate School of Humanities

1976

Junior College moved to new campus at Hino

1984

Department of Aesthetics and Art History newly established in Faculty of Humanities

1985

All University departments and courses moved to facilities at Hino

1988

Department of Home Economics in Junior College renamed Department of Life and Culture

1989

Master's Program in Clothing Science newly established in Graduate School of Home Economics

1992

Master's Program in Art History established in Graduate School of Humanities

1995

Faculty of Home Economics renamed Faculty of Human Life Sciences and restructured as three departments: Food & Health Sciences, Human Environmental Sciences, and Human Sciences & Arts

1999

Master's Programs in Graduate School in Faculty of Human Life Sciences renamed Food & Nutrition Science and Human Environmental Sciences; Sakura Hall, new office block, and Kosetsu Memorial Hall built to commemorate 100th Anniversary

2000

Departments of Japanese Literature and English Literature in Junior College renamed Departments of Japanese Communications and English Communications; Department of Life and Culture restructured as Departments of Human Ecology & Welfare and Human Nutrition

2003

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences(Department of Humanities and Social Sciences) established.
