Jissen Women's Educational Institute

Educational Ideals

Utako Shimoda, the founder of Jissen Women's Educational Institute went alone to Europe just over 100 years ago to study the latest developments in women's education. She was surprised to see women working in the same way as men, which was unknown in Japan. U. Shimoda, ca. 1902 At the same time she felt strongly that the gentleness so typical of Japanese women was a precious asset. She decided that she wanted to impart a new refined lifestyle making the best of typical characteristics of women. She expressed her determination about this as follows: "The nature of women should be pure and full of affection. Women should have strength, purity, gentleness, and grace. Such qualities blend together to mold women capable of rectifying social injustices and bringing more happiness into the world." After returning to Japan, she devoted herself to the education of Japanese girls and women and strongly promoted internationalization, inviting students from abroad to study in Japan. This idea of internationalization is still to be found at Jissen in the relationships that we maintain in the form of a variety of exchange programs with universities outside Japan.

To make our founder's words a reality and provide our students with the best possible education covering all these aspects, Jissen has taken upon itself the task of providing a good, sound, and fruitful education.
