The project is based on the three themes of “reading,” “feeling” and "spreading" The Tale of Genji.

Reading The Tale of Genji

Regarding the theme of "reading" The Tale of Genji, in addition to “research on fragments of ancient calligraphy,” which has been the focus of research on the text to date, the project utilizes microscopes to conduct research (on classical literature), enabling multifaceted research on how to read and interpret The Tale of Genji, integrating arts and sciencess. The scientific approach is also applied to establish techniques for dating ancient fragments of calligraphy.

Feeling The Tale of Genji

On this project, the attire of the Heian period based on the text of The Tale of Genji will also be restored founded on literary knowledge of social customs and culture. In addition, research will be promoted to allow visitors to experience the world of “The Tale of Genji” with the five senses under expert supervision by viewing twelve-layered ceremonial kimono and other attire of the Heian period, enjoying the fragrance of incense, and other experiences.

Spreading The Tale of Genji

The project aims to disseminate the world of The Tale of Genji in Japan and throughout the world, starting with the results of our past research and our achievements in the Private University Research Branding project.
